Being listed on top 10 most dangerous structures in the world, facing to Tianfeng Peak,the Hanging Temple is built halfway up the side of a precipitous cliff at the CuipingPeak of Mt. Hengshan. The Hanging Temple has established its unique position asChina’s unique and remarkable feats of architectural engineering with its characteristicsof gravity-defying location, unique construction, evenly distributed and well-balancedstructure. Historical records trace the construction of the origin of the Hanging Templeback 1,400 years to the later period of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534), althoughmuch was reconstructed in the later dynasties. The uncanny workmanship of the designand architecture of the Hanging Temple was highly valued by Li Bai, a famous poet inthe Tang Dynasty (618-907) and Xu Xiake, an ancient great traveler in the MingDynasty (1368―1644), as 'a Grand View under the Heavens'. The Hanging Temple isconstructed almost entirely of wood. There are more than 40 halls from big to smallhousing more than 80 sculptures. It is the only existing unique three-in-one temple ofreligions in China including Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. The HangingTemple plays a very import role in the history of Chinese architecture.
