Covering a total area of 50,000 square meters, there are more than 170,000 pieces in the collection preserved in Datong City Museum which displays the culture of the northern nomadic tribes of ancient China, Datong’s military history as a strategically important city and Buddhist culture in Datong. With their high historic value, the collections from the Northen Wei(386—534)Dynasty , Liao(916-1125)and Jin(1115-1234)Dynasties enjoy a high reputation in China. Datong is constructing a ‘Museum City’ as another city calling card. Datong City Museum implements the new development format of ‘main museum plus branch museum’. At present, Datong City Museum has one main museum and nine branch museums, namely the Liang Sicheng (1901-1972), famous Chinese architect) Memorial Hall, the Datong City Memory Museum, the Mingtang Hall Archaeological Site Museum, the Kuixing (the God of Literature) Culture Museum, the Northern Dynasties Museum, the National Integration of Liao, Jin and Yuan Dynasties Museum, the Datong Red Culture Museum, the Datong Ancient Copper Art Museum and the Zhang Naitang's (famous Datong calligrapher) Former Residence.
